How We Work
What Avancer would do with your board, and what the board would have at the end
Avancer offers three engagements to boards and committees in health and life sciences. Each is set out below: who it is for, what happens, and what the board leaves with.
Board Readiness Workshop
For whom. A full board or a committee (audit, risk, or quality) at the start of its AI oversight.
What happens. A pre-read from the AI Governance Navigator tailored to the sector; a facilitated session on the oversight duty, the regulatory landscape, and the questions to put to management; and a closing executive session without management.
What the board leaves with. A written summary of the board’s positions, the question set for management, and a draft standing agenda item.
Pre-Deployment Review
For whom. A board or committee asked to approve a specific AI deployment, such as ambient documentation, prior authorization, or clinical decision support.
What happens. An independent review of the proposal against named criteria: the state and federal rules that apply in each jurisdiction where the system will operate; the Joint Commission Responsible Use of AI certification elements; the HIPAA Security Rule requirements due in July 2027; the vendor terms (no training on the organization’s data, change notification, audit rights, indemnification, and performance remediation); clinical safety and workflow; and the monitoring the board should require afterward. The review includes interviews with the sponsor, the general counsel, and the clinical or operational owner, and concludes with a written opinion. It is designed as the way to approve faster with conditions, not as a brake.
What the board leaves with. A review memorandum with findings, the conditions the board should attach to approval, and the monitoring the board should require afterward.
30-Minute Board Briefing
For whom. A scheduled board or committee meeting.
What happens. A briefing on one development or decision (a new regulation, an enforcement action, a vendor contract term, or a reported failure elsewhere) with the questions it raises for this board.
How long. Thirty minutes within a scheduled meeting, with a two-page pre-read.
What the board leaves with. A two-page pre-read for the board pack and a one-page follow-up.
How Engagements Are Run
The principals do the work; Avancer does not staff engagements with associates. Avancer holds no vendor, investor, or product relationships that bear on its advice, and discloses any that arise. Everything a board shares with Avancer is held in confidence. Every engagement begins with a stakeholder analysis grounded in the engagement’s intent.
